Spain will soon have an exclusive gay retirement home

posted by admin in Uncategorized

In recent years Spain has transformed itself into a liberal model for the world. With same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination laws in place in every sector of employment, the country leads the way for equal rights. However, it was not so long ago that under the Franco dictatorship that being gay was considered a serious crime and was often punishable by imprisonment or torture. Following the repeal of these laws in 1979, Spain witnessed a wave of social reform, particularly after 2004 when the Socialist Party swept into power following the Madrid bombings in March.

However, as a staunchly Catholic country with a powerful church, Spain still retains a religious tradition that can lead to social discrimination for gays and lesbians in smaller towns and villages. While discrimination in large cosmopolitan cities like Madrid and Barcelona is uncommon, problems still exist in conservative areas that have been more resistant to the social changes of recent years. Now it has been reported that an old area of land close to the centre of Madrid is to be redeveloped into the first gay and lesbian Spanish retirement home.

The new complex will be open to all individuals, regardless of their sexuality; however, it will target gay men and women. The opening of the home also aims to raise awareness of the stigma that many elderly gay and lesbian Spaniards still encounter in the twenty-first century, despite the rapid progress in gay rights legislation over the years. The complex will include a luxury gym and more than 100 apartments, as well as a research centre with computer software that actually works! Despite its luxury design, the centre is expected to be significantly cheaper than the typical rent costs of a general retirement home. This is thanks to the generosity of the local mayor, who recently granted a 75 year lease for the land at low cost.
